7pm This Latin-infused session will
cover the basic rumba and Cha-Cha (think Santana’s

your balance and control, while the Cha-Cha
will develop your sense of rhythm and syncopation.

the TANGO!
American Style Tango Session
Dates: June 16, 23, 30 & July
7 at 8pm
The Tango has been featured in many films
and burned forever in our minds as the most
earthy and dramatic social dance to date.
Remember Antonio Banderes in that steamy tango
scene in “Take the Lead”? Or the
intense tango scene with Richard Gere and
Jennifer Lopez in “Shall We Dance?”
Who could forget Al Pacino in “The Scent
of a Woman?” With that inspiration in
mind, the Tango is the most challenging dance
to learn. Therefore we require that you take
the 7pm Rumba/Cha-Cha class or have at least
six months of social ballroom dance experience.
Get ready for a sultry start to your summer
with the Tango!
The cost for each 4-week session is
$40 for singles and $72 per couple.
Or drop in for a single class at $12 per person.
Each session will be followed by a social
dance party with music, dancing, snacks and
decorations. In each session, instructors
Doug and Kimberlee McHugh will introduce a
ballroom dance style with enough material
to get students comfortable on the dance floor.
Basic steps will be taught with additional
steps and styling each week. Dress is casual
and smooth-soled shoes are highly recommended.

At
the Whim of the Waters
…a Photographic Exhibit of a Disappearing
Island Culture
On September 23, the
Cultural Center will open an unusual exhibit
of images found in a trash pile decades after
they were taken by Rollins Tyler,
all depicting life on tiny, remote Smith Island
in Chesapeake Bay where his family had lived
for generations. The photographs are, however,
of broader significance: they are personal yet
universally relevant images of the powers, perils
and relationship between nature and humankind.
Barbara Bohrer, who found the
negatives and has spent 19 years building the
exhibit, invites the public to attend a free
reception to celebrate this gorgeous collection
on Saturday, September 26, from 6-8pm.
Susan Evans, a 13th generation
ancestral Smith Islander, will come from the
island to prepare the food for the reception,
including the traditional Smith Island 10-layer
cake that is now the official dessert of the
state of Maryland, and appetizers made with
Smith Island crab. The exhibit, which is free,
runs through October 4.
