This is an ideal class for artists who paint with pastels and would like to expand their use of this versatile medium. It is also suitable for beginners as lessons can accommodate artists who would like to explore painting with pastels. Pastel paint provides so are so many possibilities: using it dry, altering it to a wet medium, combining it with other mediums. And the choices of pastel sticks and surfaces just keeps growing! Each class will begin with an introductory lesson and allow for plenty of easel time with individual feedback. Instruction will include pastel techniques with hard and soft pastels, underpaintings techniques and the principles of composition & color. We will use different surfaces for painting; pastel papers, sanded papers and sanded boards. Some class favorites such as Canson pastel paper and sanded boards such as Sennelier LaCarte, Art Spectrum, UArt and Pastelmat. We will work from photos, still life set-ups and enjoy some time outdoors if the weather permits! Join this class and have some fun painting with pastels! Betsy Payne Cook paints exclusively with pastels, and is honored to be elected as a Juried Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America and to have achieved signature membership status in the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod. Betsy is also acknowledged as a Juried Master Artist at the Cape Cod Art Association. Betsy's paintings depict her impressions of the landscape and its abundance of colors. She paints both en plein air and in her studio; and conveys her love of the outdoors in each painting. Betsy publishes a newsletter and a blog both titled "Painting In and Out", sharing her thoughts on her life as an artist. Betsy's pastel paintings are represented by Gallery Artrio at 50 Pearl Street in Hyannis. The gallery provides visitors an opportunity to visit the working studio; and invites you to attend the special events that are scheduled throughout the year. Betsy's work can also be viewed at various local venues including Cape Cod Art Association, Creative Arts Center in Chatham, Falmouth Arts Center, Marion Arts Center and Woodruff Art Gallery in Mashpee Commons. Betsy participates in local and national juried exhibitions, and has won numerous awards for her pastel paintings. Her painting "Cold Night Out" was awarded Best in Show at the "For Pastels Only on Cape Cod 2013" National Juried Exhibition. Her pastels have also been accepted into both the Pastel Society of America's National Exhibition and the International Association of Pastel Societies Exhibition. She is a member of several art organizations, is a past vice president Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod and continues to be active with the organization. Betsy began teaching at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in the summer of 2015. Betsy attended the College of Saint Rose in her hometown of Albany, New York; earning a Bachelor of Science in Art Education and a Masters of Science in Special Education. She taught both art and special education in the tri-city area for several years before moving to Great Britain. Betsy enjoyed the nine years she lived in a small village in Wales; and is fortunate to be able to return to travel and visit her friends and family. If you purchase your own we will use: Sennelier Lacarte, Art Spectrum, UArt, Pastelmat and Pastel Premier. Hard pastels -such as Nu-Pastels, Rembrandts Soft pastels – such as Great American, Unison, Terry Ludwig I will review materials in the first class and will have pastels for you to use while you explore the various hard and soft pastels. Locally, you can purchase some of the pastels and papers from Woodrufts Art Store in Mashpee. ACMoore and Michaels have limited supplies but might have hard pastels listed above. Soft pastels such as Unison, Great American, Sennelier, & Terry Ludwig pastels can be purchased on-line from art supply companies such as ASW, Jerry’s Artarama, Dick Blick and Dakota Art Supplies.
