Neil Grant's Process Journal entry #2: Forging the Framework: Building the Sculpture’s Skeleton

Every great sculpture begins with something unseen — a hidden structure that supports everything to come. In this week’s video journal, Neil takes us into the heart of that beginning as he welds together the metal skeleton for his new sculpture, commissioned by the Cultural Center of Cape Cod.

This framework, or “armature,” will serve as the backbone for the final piece — a small-scale maquette that mirrors the proportions and energy of the much larger sculpture to come. Sparks fly and ideas take shape as Neil methodically joins each section of metal, transforming loose materials into a living structure that already hints at movement and balance.

It’s a fascinating look beneath the surface of the creative process — where art, engineering, and imagination meet in a shower of light and steel. Watch as the sculpture’s bones are forged, and the foundation for something extraordinary begins to emerge.
